Strangers House is a contemporary art gallery in Colaba, Mumbai, shaped by alternate art histories, universalism and black consciousness, with a lens drawn from the writings of Dr B. R. Ambedkar and Cheikh Anta Diop. Its programme builds connections between India, Africa and Latin America, and favours material, artisanal practice across wood, bronze, terracotta, print, ceramic and paint.
The gallery takes its name from the Strangers Guest House that occupied Clark House between 1940 and 1962, a home to long-term guests, sailors and travellers. It is led by artistic director Sumesh Sharma, a Mumbai-based curator and co-founder of the Clark House Initiative, who has curated Dak'Art 2016 and exhibitions internationally.
