Part of the Four Sisters series, this work combines personal memory, public figures, and imagined personalities through stylised portraiture. Vanessa was inspired by strong and self-assured women while developing the upper figures, including French journalist and author Rokhaya Diallo. The lower left figure was influenced by Vanessa’s own appearance after shaving her head, while the final figure references the strict presence of an Indian school teacher. Bold colour contrasts and simplified expressions give each figure a distinct emotional presence.
