Did you know the Great Indian Bustard was once considered to be India’s national bird. It is said that the fear of mispronouncing its name made people uncomfortable, and this magnificent bird slowly disappeared into the background. Once, the Great Indian Bustard walked across grasslands in many parts of our country. In the 1960s there were more than a thousand of them. By 2008 the number had fallen to around 300, and today fewer than 150 birds remain in the wild. In this piece, the bird shares its story. A story of walking freely through the grasslands and flying across open skies without interruption. The woman sits beside it, listening gently to its plea. A hope that the mother will care for this being. A soft prayer that we will protect what still remains.
