Superstitious Faith

Superstitious Faith

In this diptych, I share a story that has stayed with me. Once I travelled to a semi arid region of Tamil Nadu called Dindigul, where I learned that people would kill the slender loris. There was a belief that if a pregnant woman saw a slender loris, her child would be born looking like it. Because of this story, this gentle and slow creature was killed, even though the belief carried no truth. I often think about how stories like this shape the way we see the world. I see something similar happen to women. Society creates many stories around us, building fear, suspicion and distance between us and them. Yet a few voices always remain, trying to keep the trail of truth alive.
In this image the woman who looks straight at you almost asks a question. Will you allow me to exist, to bloom, to grow and to create balance in this world. It is a powerful question that asks us to reflect on the stories we continue to believe.
