This piece is an attempt at a self portrait. I have often felt that I was somehow married to the forest, always wanting to speak for the things that need care and attention. I do not always know where my world begins or what my religion is meant to be. I was born to a Catholic Malayalee family, yet my faith often wandered into the tenderness of the Bhakti movement, into the words of Akka Mahadevi and the idea that the divine can live in every being. I grew up surrounded by rich green land, flowers, birds and animals. I laughed easily and built small imaginary worlds where everything felt safe and abundant. In this work she walks through a garden of abundance. It is a sight I deeply long for, and also a gentle reminder of the world we could still choose to build.
